The TECHNÉ OSTRAVA Festival was established in 2002 in order to draw attention to the issues of and the necessity to protect technical and industrial monuments as an integral part of our as well as European cultural heritage. This will be our 9th year. It is organized in a city rich with industrial tradition where, within a small area, numerous monuments of a technical and industrial architecture are condensed, documenting the extensive industrial revolution that marked the look of the city, primarily during the 19th and 20th centuries. In addition to the technical element, the festival also entails strong cultural charge. Its topics, both for competing films and TV documentaries shown during the festival projections as well as for scientific colloquium and presentation materials of the proceedings, cover the protection of technical and industrial heritage and the possibilities of its new use.
From the very beginning the very point of the festival is to inform experts as well as the general public with the possibilities and outcomes of care and protection of industrial and technical monuments in the Czech Republic as well as abroad. The festival hosts expert seminars, encounters and discussion programmes, excursions for experts and students to technical open air museums in Ostrava and its vicinity which is connected with monuments of the industrial past. The importance of the festival is emphasized by the patronage of the Mayor of Ostrava and the Chancellor of VSB – Technical University Ostrava.
The organizers successfully co-operate with VSB – Technical University Ostrava and the LANDEK Foundation, Mining Museum Landek and Mining Museum in Příbram. Among the foreign participants it is important to mention the Mining Museum in Kremnica, Hornonitriansky Mining Open Air Museum Cigeĺ, Silesian Polytechnics in Glivice, Katowice School of Economics, Museum of Mining in Zabrz, Bergbaumuseum Freiberg or the Technische Universitat Bergakademie in Freiberg and other institutions.
In terms of scientific content the festival not only covers technical and industrial monuments but also wider aspects related to the technical monuments, such as tourism, architecture, original handicrafts, culture of labour, history and social aspects of industrial development, influence of industry on the development of towns, development of level of education, etc. These topics are most significantly reflected in the annually published proceedings of expert lectures from the international colloquium of the TECHNÉ OSTRAVA festival.
The concept of the festival focuses on domestic (Czech) conditions and positive examples of what has been achieved abroad in this area – how the individual countries preserve their industrial heritage and technical monuments and how they use them; e.g. how the protection and use of technical monuments help develop tourism in seemingly little attractive industrial areas.
The festival invites authors and experts in the respective topics from European countries with an industrial tradition, TV and film companies and other institutions involved in the area of technical and industrial monuments.
As mentioned above, the organizers of the festival have co-operated since the very beginning with VSB – Technical University of Ostrava where students may sign up for subjects related to technical monuments and their use. This co-operation later engaged other universities covering similar fields. The result of this co-operation concerns the scientific colloquiums organized as a part of TECHNÉ OSTRAVA, contributions of which are annually published in the proceedings.
